Memory Eternal: Met. +Laurus

His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia reposed last Sunday, fittingly on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. His accomplishments were many but it is likely he will be remembered for his instrumental role in restoring unity to the long divided Russian Church.

May his memory be eternal!

The last one...

Frank Buckles holds a unique distinction in the United States. He is believed to be the last living American veteran of World War I. Mr. Buckles is 107 now, but he was 16 (he lied about his age) when he enlisted in the Army to go fight the Kaiser in what was wishfully labeled the "war to end all wars." Yesterday he was received at the White House by President Bush. The veterans of that war are rapidly disappearing all over the world. It is believed that Germany's last veteran died in January. The Austro-Hungarian Empire's army has at least one still living veteran. France is down to one. In many countries elaborate funeral plans are being made for the passing of their last veteran. No word on what plans if any exist for Mr. Buckles who reportedly is doing fifty sit ups a day and was still driving a tractor until a few years ago.

Although it would seem he has already been granted "many years;" I pray that he may enjoy good health and happiness during whatever time he may have left on this side of the pearly gates. May the memory of all those who have served be eternal.
