Lord Sassoon, the Commercial Secretary, said the Treasury would block any plans. “The Government is opposed to direct taxes financing the EU budget,” he said. “The UK believes that taxation is a matter for Member States to determine at a national level and would have a veto over any plans for such taxes."

Although not an eschatological fanatic (I don't really believe in any scenarios,even Orthodox or Catholic), I can see how something like this could stoke the embers of the pre-trib rapture crowd.
ReplyDeleteI see it as a political play to try and salvage an already disintegrating 'union' which is doomed to failure. The British will always veto such attempts and although the Germans may play along a while longer, eventually they will tire of the EU nonsense and the 'all fall down' will begin.
