Start nothing. Finish everything.
In America it always takes something like a suicide or a school shooting before people understand the psychological repercussions of bullying. In this incident, it was a well deserved body slam. Glad it looks like it will stop there!
I was bullied a lot for being the fat kid and was also called "fag" and "queer" clear through middle school. Honestly, it wasn't until I started fighting back with my fists and then making amends with my words that things turned around. I don't like violence, but I also hate this idea that it is better to be the victim that to hurt somebody's feelings. School children are not martyrs, and we ought to treat this with a modicum of some common sense.
This sounds awful, but my 4yo son had begun (on occasion) hitting his older (by 3.5 years) brother. The older son would pitifully not defend himself and cry that the younger one was hurting him. Nothing we did worked because the younger one realized that the older one wouldn't defend himself. In desperation I finally told him to hit his brother back, reasoning that the younger one might learn not to try to jump on someone twice his size. Not that we condone violence around here, but the lesson got learned...
I'm pretty anti-violence myself, but I can't imagine anything wrong with what this kid has done. And as a former victim of bullying, I did learn that a well timed and forceful F bomb placed in a rejoinder to insults deters people from continuing to mess with you, which is somewhat violent I guess.
