I have just returned from the hospital visiting my Godson Basil who was in a very serious car wreck earlier today in Merced. After the fire-rescue got him out of his vehicle using the "jaws of life" he was flown by helicopter to the regional trauma center here in Modesto. According to his mom he has a severely broken leg, four broken ribs and bruised liver and lungs. They will be operating on his leg tomorrow. Needless to say he is in great pain.
Fr. David rushed up from Merced and following prayers for the sick and injured Basil took confession. He was not able to commune for medical reasons.
By the mercy of God his injuries, as grave as they are, are not seen as immediately life threatening and he is expected to recover. But that process is likely to be long and painful. In addition to the terrible injuries I am fairly certain Basil has no medical insurance.
Your prayers for my Godson are coveted and deeply appreciated.
There is of course never a "good time" for this sort of thing to happen. But it comes in my case on the eve of a trip back East to deal with serious ongoing family issues. Rarely if ever have I traveled while so conflicted in matters of duty.
Blogging will be sporadic until Monday.

I'll add him to my prayers. Lord have mercy!
I'll add him and the rest of your family to my prayers and intentions. I hope all things work out as well as they can, but I cannot begin to imagine how hard this is.
Holy Father, have mercy upon your child and servant John and upon his family. Lord, hear our prayer.
Prayer sent your way.
Prayers for Basil and for you.
Lord have mercy!
I will most certainly keep Basil - and his family - in my prayers.
I will add Basil to the prayer list at the Monastery. May the Lord, through the intercession of the Holy Unmercenaries, grant him relief and healing. And may Christ accompany you on your necessary journey, too, John.
John: May God bless your Godson Basil and his family, and you too. We all value your work highly and ask that God protect you all.
As John is flying, to deal with his own family matters, I note from Fr David's email Friday night -
"Basil had his surgery tonight on his right leg; the femur is broken... inserted a reinforcing rod into the bone, with screws on either end. This is a permanent thing, so airports will always be extra fun for Basil! In addition, the physicians have clarified some things: Basil did have a broken vertebra in his neck area... no danger of paralysis... heal normally in about two months. Basil also had a minor break of a small bone in his wrist.... The surgeon thought that the most painful part of all this will be Basil's ribs, which will smart as they heal over the next few months. Everything else that we've reported is the same: the bruised (but never bleeding) liver (which will regenerate well), plus the bruised lungs (which will also heal up)... he is going to recover! ...There is no new information about the accident itself and the other driver, who fled the scene, leaving his own truck and Basil behind until some good Samaritan came along to help Basil."
Thank you all for your prayers.
