The Washington, D.C. Office of Human Rights confirmed that it is investigating allegations that Catholic University violated the human rights of Muslim students by not allowing them to form a Muslim student group and by not providing them rooms without Christian symbols for their daily prayers.Read the rest here.
The investigation alleges that Muslim students “must perform their prayers surrounded by symbols of Catholicism – e.g., a wooden crucifix, paintings of Jesus, pictures of priests and theologians which many Muslim students find inappropriate.”
A spokesperson for the Office of Human Rights told Fox News they had received a 60-page complaint against the private university. The investigation, they said, could take as long a six months.

This is just grandstanding and trying to stick their finger in the eyes of Catholics. The complaint should be immediately dismissed as frivolous and the students should be told that they will not be allowed to return next semester and to plan on transferring to another school. The professor should be disciplined, though I fear his tenure will protect him from any consequences for his outrageous actions.
Hello? It's a Catholic university?? Who pointed a gun at your head?
ReplyDeleteI liked someone's comment that said "it's like going into a strip club and then being offended at the nudity."
The professor is not from Catholic U., but from another institution in D.C., George Washington U. Law School. I haven't looked it up, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's the same law professor who filed a complaint against Catholic U. for reinstating dorms unmixed by sex--i.e., men's dorms and women's dorms.

One assumes they could pray in their dorm rooms, where I think it safe to say they don't have any of the "objectionable" images.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is any reason a Christian University needs to provide public areas for non-Christian, communal prayers. Does Al-Azar provide a Coptic Orthodox Chapel? A Latin Catholic Chapel? I suspect not.
I know for a fact that there are mosques in the District of Columbia, so let them go to prayers there.
Wheaton might work. No risk of images there.
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed the same professor who was behind the complaint about same-sex dorms: John Banzhaf of George Washington University. In fact, this latest complaint was not due to Muslim students at all:
