GOP becoming reality TV show

Media mogul Donald Trump will moderate a Republican presidential debate sponsored by the conservative website Newsmax in Des Moines, Iowa on Dec. 27, Newsmax confirmed today.

“We approached Donald Trump,” Newsmax.com executive director Steve Coz told The Fix. “He is a well-known and vocal conservative, and we thought it was a great partnership.”

Trump adviser Michael Cohen confirmed his participation.

This is an absolutely terrific idea. What better way to build confidence in the GOP primary process, and to reinforce the gravtias of candidates who are aspiring to be seen as prepared for the presidency, then to submit them to questioning from a reality-TV star whose appeal to conservatives is rooted in the fact that he spent his own short-lived freak-show presidential campaign questioning Obama’s citizenship, right up until the killing of Bin Laden wiped the smug, megalomaniacal grin off his face?

In all seriousness, this guy is a showman. It’s all about the show. There’s no telling what he’ll say or do or ask. This won’t end well. You’ll see.

This should be embarrassing.  The fact that no one in the GOP is in the least bit serves as further evidence that the once great political party of the center-right has become the domicile of tin foil hat conspiracy theorists, radical social-cons, militaristic imperialists and right wing buffoons.

This country desperately needs a viable third party not beholden to the lunatic fringe of either the left or the right.

  1. "It’s all about the show."

American politics in general has become all about the show. There's no dignity in it anymore. It's becoming more and more like Italian politics every day.

  2. Yup, need a third, and maybe fourth, party. But Ron Paul says he isn't going to start one, and he's the only candidate I will even consider, the only one who MAY be honest.

Please somebody disabuse me if you know otherwise, and I will withhold my vote entirely, not wishing to give my mandate to any crook, period.

  3. There really aren't many options for catholic Christians. Green Party may be the best option though one has to of course hold ones nose there in many respects there as well. I looked at the Socialist Party of America, which seems a bit unhinged if generally rhetorically correct on the economic power structure. Still probably a far better choice than the Republican Party, all things considered.

  4. Anastasia,

Ron Paul is a good man, worthy of your vote. He's getting mine.

As an addendum to this post, it should be noted that both Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman have both uninvited themselves from this clownish debate, stating reasons to the effect that the issues are too serious for such a format. Kudos to both of them.

Newsmax, on whose mailing list I ended up on who is hosting this debate, is somewhat of a joke(and I am being charitable) reporting wise on all the candidates. If you're not in the "in" crowd, not for expanding the wars and not interested in viewpoints other than what the establishment has been feeding us for so long, you just ain't really talked about a whole lot if at all.

  5. As an Orthodox Christian, Ron Paul is the only candidate I will be voting for, even if I have to write him in like I did 4 years ago.

Clark Carlton, Orthodox author, wrote this the last election cycle: An Open Letter to Orthodox Christians, on Behalf of Ron Paul

  6. You do a disservice to the lunatic fringe. This is a media event, and though many lunatics will be there, no one of the fringe variety will be allowed in.
