In some ways, Bastille Day is a very appropriate holiday
for a republic to have. Republics, after all, tend to be based on a
minority telling lies to the majority, pretending to be looking out for
their best interests, and the majority pretending to believe them, going
along with the charade even though they know perfectly well they are
being lied to. One side pretends to care, the other pretends to believe
them and all go along with it because they want to believe the narrative
and don’t wish to be confused with the facts. In the same way, Bastille
Day is, like Napoleon himself said about history, “a set of lies agreed
upon”.
-The Mad Monarchist
Tell that to those who stormed the Bastille.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they will tell you where to go.
Vive La Republique!
"When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny." - Thomas Jefferson
ReplyDeleteGotta hand it to the French, they know their government still fears them at least to some degree, and they're not afraid to show it. I fear we may have lost that edge in the US.
Vive la France!
Read a pithy comment on a blog ages ago, which has remained with me:
ReplyDeleteIf we switched from democracy to monarchy, we'd still be screwed. The difference is that no politician would tell us that that is what we elected them to do to us.
The unfortunate truth is, we couldn't be monarchists even if we wanted to be. I'll add a blog post on this in the next few days.
