Not to be argumentative towards yourself, but may I ask what specifically was "something silly as this"? Was it the note which a Brian Kopp allegedly sent to Putin, asking Putin to "consecrate" Russia to the "Immaculate Heart of the Theotokos"?

I might be naive in general and uniformed about the viewpoints and sensitivities of our Orthodox brethren in particular, but I assure you I was not drunk when I made that post. Further, I am under no illusions that posting to a little blog no one reads and a political forum no one cares about constitutes delusions of grandeur regarding any world stage.
I just see an accelerating moral decay and the growing persecution of all orthodox Christians, east and west, and hope for Divine Intervention. Our world needs a break. For Traditional Catholics that would be the Consecration of Russia according to Our Lady of Fatima’s directives.
Dr. Kopp I will accept your word with regards knowledge of Orthodox sensitivities on this subject. But FYI most Orthodox Christians, and Russians in particular, consider the whole Fatima mandate to pray for the conversion of Russia highly offensive. Russia has been Orthodox for a thousand years and its soil is drenched with the blood of martyrs. Given the recent socio-political trends perhaps Western Europe and the United States might be in greater need of such dedicated prayers.
Not Catholic and not familiar with the subject, but wouldn't this mandate have been fulfilled with the fall of the atheist government and restoration of free Christian worship in 1991?
I'd recommend interested readers check out Fr. Andrew Phillips' post on his Orthodox England Events Blog from August 17, 2013 titled, "Lourdes and Fatima: True or False" for an Orthodox perspective on this issue. The link to the blog is here:
Traditional Catholics who think that Russia still has to be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary tend to fall into one of two camps.
Brian Kopp is a good example of the first camp: respectful of Russia and Orthodoxy, they see Russia as an already great country that will do more phenomenal things once the consecration is done. Blogs like Eponymous Flower, Rorate Caeli and many others fall into this camp.
The second camp is the likes of Fr. Nicholas Gruner and the Fatima Crusader and the majority of Traddie combox trollers I have seen. Russia for them is the embodiment of corruption and evil and have scant respect for Russian Orthodoxy. Some of this group view Russian Orthodoxy as the true "error of Russia" that is condemned in Fatima. Russia has value for them only because they think it will be magically transformed into a Roman Catholic paradise once the "Consecration" is done, but show little sign of valuing Russia and its people for what it really is.

ReplyDeleteTraditional Catholics have long argued that there was no proper consecration and Russia has not been converted because it is not Roman Catholic.

Thanks for that link Jason. Very edifying.
