The Southwest Chief remains a rather nice train ride with a dining car and sleepers, even if it can't compete with the original in terms of luxury. However, in my opinion Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles was the better train in the Chicago-LA market, at least in terms of appearance. The appeal of Santa Fe's Fred Harvey diners is said to have owed as much to the waitresses as to the food.
Well, it just can't compare with Amtrack!!!
