Politically speaking, the term "illegal alien" needs to be reintroduced and used in place of the misleading term immigrant whenever appropriate. Likewise,"refugee" needs to be used whenever appropriate. Unless we separate these three issues clearly, it will be impossible to deal with these issues; how do we stop illegal immigration, what level of legal immigration best serves the interests of these United States, and how do we best meet our moral and treaty obligations to aid and give refuge to refugees. If we continue to allow these three very separate issues to be lumped indiscriminately together then there can be no solutions because we have failed to identify the problems that face us.
