What the cartoon underscores is that open borders are always a disaster for the native society. California is literally going bankrupt for the sake of open borders. Phoenix, Arizona now hosts open warfare among rival Mexican drug cartels.
If the federal government is not going to defend the nation's territorial and cultural integrity--indeed, if the federal government will instead defend the territorial and cultural integrity of Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, South Korea, Israel, et al.--then the federal government should be abolished as a useless, expensive relic.
Go ahead a shoot me for what I am about to repeat, "We are a nation of immigrants".
A completely anachronistic perspective. None of the native societies maintained borders in the manner of a modern nation-state, or attempted to do so. In fact, the U.S. itself did not regulate, or pay much attention to immigration, until several decades after independence. One might take a look at Nathaniel Philbrick's "Mayflower" to get a more detailed (and accurate) description of one set of encounters between European settlers and the locals.
David, All of my ancestors over the last 400 years, but one, were immigrants. They ALL came obeying the laws of the time.
We have somewhere between twelve and forty million people in our country who did NOT enter under the prevailing laws. That is why we call them illegal immigrants.
