Iran threatens US aircraft carrier

Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf, the state news agency quoted army chief Ataollah Salehi as saying on Tuesday.

"Iran will not repeat its warning ... the enemy's carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf," Salehi told IRNA.

"I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying.

Salehi did not name the aircraft carrier or give details of the action Iran might take if it returned. However, last week a spokeswoman for the U.S. 5th Fleet said the USS John C. Stennis had left the Gulf.

Our response to Iran should be to send 2 carrier battle groups to the Strait of Hormuz - with liberal rules of engagement - and see if our Persian friends get the message.

We'd do the same thing Iran has just done if foreign aircraft from a country threatening us had carriers were, say, in the Gulf of Mexico.

I hope Iran won't follow through on this, because it will just play into the hands of the war hawks here.

Bring it on Ayatollah! Just looking for an excuse to send a small tactical nuke your way. Good bye Teheran.

I'm not a war hawk -
I am a

WAR DRAGON!

As Darth Sidious said: kill them - kill them all!

Actually foreign nations, including the USSR used to routinely thumb their nose at us by sending their warships and spy ships right up to the very edge of our territorial waters. We didn't like it, but we kept our mouths shut over it.

I think Iran is playing right into the hands of the neo imperialists running Washington. That said the Persian Gulf, less the 12 mile limit, is international waters and the straits of Hormuz are an international waterway protected by maritime law as a free passageway for shipping. The best thing to do here is let Iran vent and calmly make it clear that we are not going to attack them, but we won't let them turn the Gulf into their own private lake. As long as they leave us alone we will reciprocate.

On the other hand if they were stupid enough to attack a US warship then that could not go unanswered and we would have to give them a bloody nose.

Tonkin redux.

Who benefits from a war with Iran?

How heartwarming to see our gay-friendly, feminist military going to war to protect the oil profits of Saudi monarchs.

Who benefits from a war with Iran? Not us. Iran hasn't done anything to us, at least so far.

Who benefits? Israel.

How about a Dominican Republic redux and Zarathustra's return?

I find hilarious the Iranian "threats" to our carrier. There isn't a Navy in the whole world to compare to ours and the Iranians think they can scare us with their bathtub Navy??? Their most recent launch, which they made a great hulabaloo about, looked like an armoured Minnow.

Sheaaaah!

We should do just as we please in international waters. Its the principle of the thing.

(I come from a Navy family so I take an (almost) obscene pride, in our nation's peerless naval forces! :-) )

You go, girl. The Navy hasn't fought a real war in over 60 years. When they do, it won't take much for those multi-zillion dollar washtubs to turn into sinking infernos.

With pregnant sailors.
