Metropolitan Philip (memory eternal) was decidedly cool towards monasticism.

From His Eminence's lips to God's ears!

Pretty trivial. What a fantasy, that monasticism is a magic solution to dishonest bishops and clergy, dishonest church history. Even Joseph doesn't realize that if you have good laymen you get good clergy. Monastics are a smokescreen.
Sucker converts have stars in their eyes every time they see a funny hat, a beard and lots of black cloth.

Most of the funny hats, beards and cassocks are fully assimilated Americans at this point. The Antiochians in Central and South America have made it clear that culturally they are a "Latin American" Church. And Orthodox missions are starting among the ethnically distinct indigenous peoples in Guatemala and elsewhere.

At some point, a church of converts perforce becomes a church of cradles, as with the Angles, Slavs and everybody else of Late Antiquity.
