Downton Abbey producer says Americans can't do period drama

Read the idiotic story here.

My response (just off the top of my head)...

John Adams
Deadwood
Mad Men
Boardwalk Empire
The Age of Innocence (my vote for the best period drama of the last 30 years)
Gettysburg

That list is the product of about 60 seconds of thought. Feel free to add your own contributions.

Gettysburg came to my mind as well. Also, quite a few World War II movies set in Europe like Saving Private Ryan. I won't even go into the classic movies from the 1930's like Mutual's Hunchback of Notre Dame or Gone with the Wind, though I grant you there were a few in that film who were British.
To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck also comes to mind.

Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, Road to Perdition, and (though I thought abyssmal) Gangs of New York.

Disagree about Deadwood & Boardwalk. The suspension of disbelief is a little bit lacking, sadly. Also disagree with DWW (from a commenter)

On board with Mad Men & Gettysburg.

I would hesitantly add There Will Be Blood.
