The GOP is once again threatening the US Government with default on its debt by refusing to authorize the routine increase in the debt limit. (One notes they only seem to rediscover their concerns about spiraling debt when Democrats are in power.) It should go without saying that if they ever actually follow through with their threats, the consequences could be catastrophic.

I can't help but wonder the consequences if a state that possesses The Bomb should default on its debts.
I'm not sure what the bomb will do. Who are we going to drop it on? Are you going to nuke people for refusing to buy your bonds or provide services without payment? The bomb will not keep the Federal Government running without money. Taxes are so low and spending so high that we have to borrow money just to fund the military. Will the soldiers responsible for firing the missiles do it even if they aren't being paid? If we default on our debt maybe JP Morgan Chase will put a lien on our nukes until they get paid.
John, John. Do you not fear a mob gone mad? Look how Germany panned out when the Weimar republic collapsed.
Clearly I misread your first comment. I honestly have no idea what would happen if the world's only true superpower allowed a bunch of wingnuts to drive it off the cliff. We would be in uncharted waters.
Why should the GOP, or anybody else, continue to enable this apostate, Globohomo empire?
Because for most of us ordinary people, this country (happily less an empire than a month ago) is our home, and we spend most of our time doing our jobs, raising our families and engaging in the little unexciting things that we find give meaning to our lives. Your finding our religion wanting, our openness to foreigners threatening, and our social tolerance of homosexuality disturbing does not, for most of us, make us long for Goetterdaemerung.
Maybe your foreign and LGBTQ friends can bail the USG out.
