So, how many of those who voted for this have been excommunicated? There was a day when the immediate answer would have been "all of them." This is as much an indictment of the Church as it is of modern society. The usual suspects are crowing with a particular glee because Greece is the first ostensibly Orthodox country to cave on this. And they are not wrong. Bluntly, this was a stunning defeat for the Church, made all the worse by the fact that they largely acquiesced to it.

The Church of Greece did speak up against this. There is much to criticize the Church of Greece for but on this issue they did try to do the right thing.. The Greek political elite probably would not care if they were excommunicated. If they cared they would not have voted this way to begin with.

If they honestly don't care what the Church teaches, even to the point of being indifferent to the threat of excommunication, then that is probably an even a stronger reason why the Holy Synod should act decisively.
