Donald Trump plans to turn his Mar-a-Lago club into an official presidential retreat where foreign leaders can be hosted and future presidents offered free memberships.
The US president wants the Florida resort to become a venue for international summits and a holiday residence for presidents visiting the state, according to a proposal submitted to Palm Beach County Officials.
The plans, presented by lawyers for the Trump International Golf Club, would also give future presidents complimentary memberships to the club.
“Just as Camp David, Windsor Castle, or the Élysée Palace are known worldwide, so too will the presidential golf course in Palm Beach county,” Harvey Oyer, a lawyer representing the Trump course, wrote to the Palm Beach county board of county commissioners in a letter last month seen by the Washington Post.
“It would further cement Palm Beach county as one of the most recognisable brands and destinations in the world,” Mr Oyer told the Washington Post, adding that a name had not yet been selected for the presidential golf course.
