Britain’s terror tsar has warned that China is using AI to “rewrite history” and threaten Western democracy.
Jonathan Hall, the outgoing independent reviewer of terrorism and state threats legislation, said national security was at risk from the behaviour of the country’s sinister AI bots.
In a parting shot, he accused the authoritarian regime of using AI to plot “the slow strangulation of freedom”.
Mr Hall, who leaves his post later this month after seven years, tested Qwen3, one of China’s global AI platforms, and discovered it denied that the massacre of protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989 had ever taken place.
His concern also raises questions about the Ministry of Justice decision – first disclosed by The Telegraph – to use Qwen3 to analyse criminal records. It is the first-known use of Chinese AI systems in Whitehall.
