Feast Commemorating the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist

Today is the feast of the beheading of the Forerunner St. John the Baptist. Although called a feast it is in fact a day of strict fasting within the Orthodox Church. Many Orthodox Christians observe certain pious customs on this day including avoiding the use of cutlery and plates for whatever food they do eat during the day.
